Army: Women may lead battalions
New Delhi, July 28: In a development that was long sought for, women will now be allowed to command battalions in army's various branches-aviation, engineers and signal. According to inside sources in the Army, the NDA government is planning to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court, allowing women joining the armed forces from 2015-2016 onwards to be trained in commanding battalions.

However, they have to compete with the male counterparts to acquire these positions. While there may be some relaxation in terms of physical standards, they will have to follow the same regimen as their male counterparts.

Women so far have been stationed in non-combat units like ordinance, supply, legal and medical, and have not been allowed commanding positions.
