Resistance to Anti-Encroachment Drive by Villagers in Rajasthan's Jalore
In a recent development from Rajasthan's Jalore district, an anti-encroachment drive in Odwada village sparked significant controversy and resistance from the local populace, including a notable number of women. The operation, aimed at removing encroachments from land as directed by the high court, faced stiff opposition from villagers, leading to the deployment of additional police forces to maintain order. The drive, which involved the use of earthmoving machines, resulted in the demolition of several houses, leaving many residents in distress.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition Congress in Rajasthan, which has laid blame on the BJP-led state government for the situation. State Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra condemned the action on social media platform X, highlighting the distressing scenes of destroyed homes and affected families. Similarly, Vaibhav Gehlot, a Congress leader and son of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, voiced his concerns over the demolition of 440 houses. He argued that these homes had been protected during the Congress government's tenure through effective advocacy and suggested that a lack of such advocacy under the current administration led to an unfavorable high court decision.
Vaibhav Gehlot has also reached out to the Jalore Collector, urging a sensitive reconsideration of the matter and an appeal against the high court's decision in favor of the affected villagers. He is seeking legal advice to support the villagers further. Additionally, Sachin Pilot, former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan and a Congress leader, expressed his condemnation of the treatment meted out to protesters, emphasizing the need for a peaceful and dialogic resolution to the issue.
The administration's stance, as articulated by Jalore SP Gyan Chandra Yadav, remains that the action was taken in strict adherence to a high court directive aimed at clearing encroachments from land. The resistance from villagers initially prevented the team from entering Odwada village and led to a blockade of the road, necessitating additional police presence to commence the anti-encroachment drive.
This incident has not only highlighted the contentious issue of land encroachment and its legal and social ramifications but also brought to fore the political dynamics at play in Rajasthan. The opposition's critique points towards a deeper discontent with how such sensitive matters are being handled by those in power. As this situation unfolds, it remains a focal point for discussions on governance, legal rights, and humanitarian considerations in the state.
