Aqib and his associate Usama were killed in a 15-hour encounter at Tral which began on Saturday and ended the next day. Aqib's body was taken to his hometown at Hayina in Tral. As the encounter began, Aqib is believed to have called his mother and told her that he would fight. The Indian Army always gives a local militant a chance to surrender. However, Aqib decided that he would not surrender and requested his mother not to coax him.

As his body arrived, a large number of people who had gathered there raised anti-India and freedom slogans. The funeral had to be stopped several times as the number of people gathered there was extremely high.
As the funeral was taking place, there were incidents of heavy stone pelting in Pinjoora. Security forces following an intelligence input cordoned off the area to hunt down militants who were hiding in the area. The encounter was disrupted several times as locals came out on the streets and resorted to stone pelting.
