Amaravati, March 12: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has approved an ex gratia payment of Rs 20 lakh to the family of a woman who died by suicide after facing online trolling for praising the YSRCP government.

Tragic Incident

The woman, identified as G Gitanjali, was a homemaker from Tenali in Guntur district. On March 7, she jumped in front of a running train at Tenali railway station and sustained severe injuries. Despite being rushed to a hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

Chief Minister's Response

Expressing shock over the incident, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy sanctioned an ex gratia of Rs 20 lakh for Gitanjali's family. He also directed officials to provide necessary support to her family members, who have filed a police complaint alleging that she took her own life due to online trolling by social media activists associated with an opposition party.

Police Investigation

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday evening, Guntur district superintendent of police Tushar Dudi revealed that several social media profiles have been identified in connection with the incident. He assured that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible for the online harassment.

Political Reactions

The incident has sparked political reactions, with YSRCP leaders alleging that TDP social media supporters were behind the trolling that led to Gitanjali's death. Several YSRCP leaders, including Health Minister V Rajani, visited Gitanjali's house to offer condolences and support to her family.
