Andhra Police Book Five Temple Staff After New Year Dance Videos Go Viral

Andhra Pradesh Police have booked five staff members of the Mallikarjuna Annasatra, a free food facility linked to the Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple, after videos surfaced online showing them dancing to film songs inside temple-related premises during New Year celebrations. The footage triggered strong reactions on social media, prompting authorities to act.

Case registered after complaint by security official

Police said the case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after a formal complaint was lodged by Chief Security Officer Babu. The incident allegedly occurred within the Annasatra premises, which are considered part of the larger sacred complex. Following the complaint, an internal inquiry was launched to examine whether temple rules and provisions of the Endowments Act were violated.

Temple authorities cite violation of sanctity

Temple officials stated that the conduct shown in the videos went against long-standing norms governing behaviour inside the pilgrimage centre. "The accused staff members are alleged to have performed vulgar dances within the premises of the sacred pilgrimage centre, which hurt the religious sentiments of devotees," the temple authority said.

Strict prohibition on dancing and video reels

Executive Officer Srinivas Rao reiterated that dancing or recording reels inside the temple or its associated facilities is not allowed under any circumstances. He warned that legal action would be taken against anyone breaching these rules. "Despite clear instructions from temple authorities, the staff allegedly ignored rules and decorum during the New Year period, causing outrage among devotees," the temple authority said.

Staff removed after inquiry, says chairman

Reacting to the controversy, Mallikarjuna Annasatra Chairman Shyam acknowledged that the incident had offended devotees. He confirmed that disciplinary steps were taken after the inquiry and that all five staff members involved were removed from their duties. According to officials, the matter is being treated seriously to prevent similar incidents in future and to uphold the sanctity of the temple premises.
