Ancient Temples Dedicated to Lord Rama In Andhra Pradesh

Lord Rama, who is the seventh 'avatar' (form) of Lord Vishnu, rooted in the cultural and religious fabric of India. He is a symbol of virtue, righteousness, and ideal leadership. His life and teachings, depicted in the epic Ramayana, hold immense significance and continue to influence various aspects of Indian culture.

As his temple in the birthplace of Ayodhya is set to be inaugurated today, let's take a look at some ancient temple of the Lord Rama:

Ancient Temples In Andhra Pradesh

1. Lord Kodandarama Swamy temple

The largest and most famous temple of the Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh is the Kodandarama Swamy Temple in Vontimitta. The temple has three lofty 'gopurams' and 'mandapas' with ornate carvings depicting Lord Rama and his acolytes. The 'mandapa' is called 'Madhyarangaradapam' as it is supported over 32 pillars.

In the sanctum sanctorium or 'garbhagriha', Lord Rama's central icon, Goddess Sita, and Lakshmana are carved as a composite image, out of a single rock. Unlike most temples dedicated to Lord Rama, there is no statue of Hanuman inside. However, there is a separate temple for him. There is also an image of Ganesha in a dancing posture in the 'mandapam'.

The sanctum and attached pillared hall were built earlier, reportedly in the 14th century, while the 'gopuram' and central 'mandapa' were added later.

The temple is said to have been constructed by two devotees named Vontudu and Mittudu who were once burglars and were transformed into devotees of Lord Rama; they sacrificed their lives after construction and turned into statues as a mark of their final repentance; in the afterlife, continued their penance towards the Lord.

2. Ramatheertam Temple

Ramatheertham in Vizianagaram District is no less than any temple dedicated to Lord Rama in the state. Historians date this temple to the Third Century, however, the local legend suggests otherwise; the idols which have been covered in silver 'kavacha' (shield) are believed to have been installed by the Pandavas during their exile period of 12 years.

It is one of the places made sacred by a traditional connection with Lord Rama. Located on the Bavikonda Hills, the temple and village at the base of a chain of hills of solid rock, perennial springs of water, and various places are in a way associated with the name of Lord Rama.

Another interesting fact about this temple is that Sri Pedda Jiyar Swamy installed Ramasthoopam. To devotees, it isn't a mere pillar; it is a symbol of the temple's continuity; its living heritage-this is a civilization where the devotees also try to gift God.

Ramatheertham is also famous for its Buddhist monastery and Jain Thirthankars. At this temple, devotees clamour for a 'darshan' visit throughout the day while in the less-crowded parts of the temple, some exalted souls freely roam in adorable, shell-hooded forms. As this temple is also known for tortoises with shells marked with the 'Vishnu-naamam', or 'tilaka'. A phenomenon uninvestigated; but one that brings all visitors much amusement and delight.

This temple is the pride of Nallimurla and indirectly of India too.
