Home Minister Amit Shah Discusses Key Issues with J-K BJP Leaders in Srinagar
During his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah engaged with multiple delegations, including leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and representatives from the Pahari community and local Sikhs. This visit, which began on Thursday evening, is marked by discussions on various demands and acknowledgments of recent governmental actions.

One of the significant interactions was with a delegation led by Mohammad Younis Khan from the Pahari community. They expressed their gratitude towards the government for recognizing their long-standing demand by granting them Scheduled Tribe status. "After 50 years of struggle, we have finally obtained Scheduled Tribe status," Khan stated, highlighting the fulfillment of their demand which was not addressed by other political parties.
Additionally, a local Sikh delegation met with Shah to advocate for the inclusion of Punjabi in university syllabuses and to request assembly seat reservations similar to those provided to Kashmiri Pandits. The meeting underscored the community's efforts to seek greater recognition and support within the region's educational and political frameworks.
The visit also included discussions with BJP leaders such as Darakhshan Andrabi, Sunil Sharma, Tarun Chugh, and R S Pathania. While the initial agenda seemed focused on BJP members, there were indications that leaders from allied parties might also engage with Shah.
Sunil Sharma, General Secretary of the BJP's Jammu and Kashmir unit, clarified that the Home Minister's visit was not politically motivated but aimed at reviewing security measures ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He emphasized the success of the central government's policies, including the abrogation of Article 370, in increasing voter turnout in Srinagar.
Shah's schedule also includes a security review meeting to discuss preparations for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the annual Amarnath Yatra, set to commence on June 29 and conclude on August 19. This meeting is crucial for assessing the security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir in light of these significant events.
The possibility of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after the Amarnath Yatra is another critical aspect of Shah's visit. The Supreme Court has set a deadline of September 30 for holding these polls, marking a significant step towards restoring electoral processes in the Union Territory.
This visit by Amit Shah underscores a multifaceted approach towards addressing security concerns, acknowledging community demands, and preparing for forthcoming electoral processes in Jammu and Kashmir. It reflects ongoing efforts to engage with different stakeholders in the region to foster peace and stability.
