Amethi Killings: Rahul Gandhi and Smriti Irani Offer Support to Grieving Dalit Family
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently reached out to a Dalit man in Amethi whose family members were tragically killed. The victims included the man's son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Sonia Gandhi, through her son, also conveyed her condolences to the grieving family. Congress state president Ajay Rai visited Rae Bareli to meet the bereaved relatives.

Ram Gopal, approximately 60 years old, arrived in Sudamapuri village with the bodies of his family. They were murdered in their rented home in the Ahorwa Bhawani area of Amethi. Sunil Kumar, a 35-year-old teacher, his wife Poonam, aged 32, and their daughters Drishti and Suni were the victims. The incident has sparked widespread criticism of the state government.
Political Reactions and Support
Former Union Minister Smriti Irani also contacted the family to offer assistance. She expressed her condolences over the phone and assured them of support. BJP's former Amethi president Durgesh Tripathi visited Sudamapur village and facilitated a call between Gopal and Irani. Irani later condemned the killings on social media, stating that the government is committed to taking strict action against those responsible.
Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma arranged a phone call between Rahul Gandhi and Ram Gopal. The conversation lasted about three minutes. Sharma has been in contact with Gopal since the incident occurred. He has urged the district magistrate of Amethi to investigate all aspects of the case thoroughly.
Investigation and Political Criticism
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences for the loss of lives. Meanwhile, opposition parties have criticised the BJP government over law and order issues in the state. An initial police investigation revealed that Poonam had filed a complaint against Chandan Verma under various charges, including harassment, on August 18.
Rahul Gandhi's representative Sharma mentioned that Sonia Gandhi wanted to speak with Ram Gopal but he was unable to talk at that time. Instead, Rahul conveyed her message to him. Sharma highlighted that both Rae Bareli and Amethi constituencies are linked with the Gandhi family.
Sharma questioned why such incidents occur if law and order claims by the government are true. He stated that he informed Rahul Gandhi about the situation, who then instructed him to visit the village. The victims were originally from Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary constituency.
The police are still determining if there is any connection between Poonam's complaint and the murders. Amethi Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar Singh noted that Poonam had warned that Verma should be held accountable if anything happened to her or her family.
The tragic event has led to significant political discourse and demands for justice for the victims' family. Authorities continue their investigation into this grievous crime while political figures express their support for those affected.
