Amethi Braces For Political Face-Off As Rahul Gandhi And Smriti Irani Visit Today

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to arrive in Amethi on Monday, the same day Union Minister and local Member of Parliament (MP) Smriti Irani begins her four-day visit to the Uttar Pradesh town ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024. This sets the stage for a potential clash between the two rivals, although a face-to-face meeting between them is unlikely. The coincidence follows a period of intense campaigning for the upcoming elections in Amethi and elsewhere.

Amethi Braces For Political Face-Off As Rahul Gandhi And Smriti Irani Visit Today

Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

Rahul Gandhi's visit to Amethi is part of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which commenced on January 14 in Thoubal, Manipur, in preparation for the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May. The yatra, spanning from east to west India, will conclude on March 20 in Mumbai. Gandhi plans to conduct a roadshow and public gathering in Amethi as part of his visit.

Smriti Irani's Promise to Amethi

Smriti Irani's representative, Vijay Gupta, stated to news agency PTI that the Union Minister of Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs will embark on a four-day visit to her constituency beginning February 19. In addition to attending her housewarming event on February 22, Irani will interact with residents. During her previous election campaign, Irani had promised the residents of Amethi that she would build a house and reside there.

A Rare Encounter

The last time the two leaders were in Amethi together was two years ago, in February 2022, during the Uttar Pradesh assembly election campaign. Prior to that, their paths crossed during the 2019 election campaign.

Rahul Gandhi has been elected to the Lok Sabha three times from Amethi, the former Nehru-Gandhi family bastion, until he was defeated by Smriti Irani in the 2019 general assembly election. Rahul Gandhi subsequently won Wayanad in Kerala, his second seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
