Aligarh Muslim University to remain non-minority institution
New Delhi, April 4: Centre on Monday, April 4, withdrew its appeal from the Supreme Court against Allahabad High Court verdict holding Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as a non-minority institution.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the apex court that he is making statement only on behalf of the Centre and not AMU which has also filed an appeal. [Jamia Milia Islamia not a minority institution: AG]

The SC has allowed the government to file in eight weeks, an application seeking withdrawal of its appeal and it also permits AMU to file counter affidavit.
In April 2006, the Supreme Court had said that Aligarh Muslim University will continue to be a minority institution in terms of the 1981 constitutional amendment.
