Akhilesh Yadav Slams UP Govt On Kumbh Mela Stampede: Learn A Lesson From Today's Incident
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has slammed the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government in the wake of a tragic stampede at the Sangam during the ongoing Maha Kumbh. The incident, which resulted in several casualties, has raised concerns over crowd management and the safety measures in place for the massive gathering of devotees.
Akhilesh Yadav's First Reaction
Expressing his grief over the loss of lives, Yadav took to social media to call out the government's handling of the event. He described the tragedy as a result of mismanagement and urged authorities to act immediately. He suggested that those who sustained severe injuries should be airlifted to the best hospitals available for urgent medical attention. He also called for an efficient process to identify the deceased and ensure their remains are handed over to their families with due respect, enabling them to perform last rites at their native places.

Yadav emphasized the need to reunite individuals who may have been separated from their groups during the chaos. He recommended increasing surveillance through the deployment of helicopters to monitor crowd movement and ensure better coordination. Furthermore, he stressed that despite the unfortunate incident, the 'Royal Bath of Mauni Amavasya,' an ancient tradition believed to have continued since the Satya Yuga, should be conducted with enhanced security measures in place.
Appealing to devotees, Yadav urged them to remain calm and exercise patience during these trying times, encouraging them to complete their pilgrimage in a peaceful manner. He also insisted that the government should take lessons from the mishap and make necessary improvements to arrangements, including provisions for better accommodations, food, water, and other essential facilities for the pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh.
UP Government Responds to Criticism
Reacting to Akhilesh Yadav's statements, Uttar Pradesh Minister OP Rajbhar reassured devotees that the government was taking all necessary steps to maintain order and security at the Maha Kumbh. He urged pilgrims not to believe in any rumors and to strictly follow the instructions provided by the authorities. Rajbhar emphasized that the police and administration were on high alert and actively working to ensure the safety of everyone present. He further stated that devotees should take their holy dip at the ghats nearest to them and follow directions from security personnel stationed in the area.
While acknowledging the suggestions made by Yadav, Rajbhar stated that the government was in "alert mode" and would take appropriate actions to address concerns. He reassured the public that efforts were being made to prevent any further incidents and to streamline the management of the massive crowd.
Other Political Parties React To Kumbh Mela Stampede
Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati also weighed in on the tragedy, describing the incident as deeply saddening and expressing her condolences to the families of the deceased. She expressed her hope that the bereaved families would find the strength to cope with their loss and wished for a swift recovery for those injured.
Responding to the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, "The stampede incident in Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. I pray for the peace of the souls of the devotees who lost their lives in this accident. May God give strength to their families to bear this immense sorrow.
A humble appeal to all devotees is to maintain patience and be cautious. Follow the instructions of the administration and take care of each other's safety."
Rare Celestial Event Marks the Maha Kumbh Amid Chaos
The Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya remains one of the most sacred rituals of the Maha Kumbh, drawing an estimated 10 crore pilgrims from across the country and beyond. This year's event holds even greater spiritual significance due to the occurrence of a rare celestial alignment known as 'Triveni Yog,' a planetary configuration that is appearing after a span of 144 years. Believers consider this an extremely auspicious time for taking the holy dip, amplifying the number of devotees flocking to the ghats.
The chaotic scene unfolded around 2 AM when the wailing sirens of ambulances and police vehicles disrupted the devotional chants of mantras and shlokas that had been echoing through the Kumbh Mela grounds. Emergency response teams rushed to the site, with injured devotees being transported to the central hospital set up within the Mela premises for immediate medical attention.
Akharas Resume Holy Dip After Initial Halt
Following the tragic stampede, the Akharas, a key part of the Kumbh tradition, initially decided to postpone their sacred bathing rituals for the day. However, later in the day, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad President Ravindra Puri confirmed that the snan would be resumed.
Speaking to ANI, Puri explained that the decision to delay the ritual was taken in the morning due to the overwhelming crowd gathered at the ghats, which posed a safety risk. Now, with the situation gradually stabilizing and the ghats being cleared, the Akharas were ready to proceed with their holy dip. He assured that all religious groups, including Mahamandaleshwars, Mandaleshwars, and Naga Sadhus, along with other devotees, would be able to partake in the ritual later in the day while remaining in close coordination with the Mela administration.
As the Maha Kumbh progresses, authorities remain under pressure to enhance security measures and ensure that such incidents are avoided in the coming days, especially with the influx of millions of pilgrims expected for the upcoming key bathing dates.
