Akhilesh Yadav Slams IOA for 'Reprehensible' Statement on Phogat
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) over its president's comments on wrestler Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Olympics. He also indirectly criticised the Narendra Modi government, suggesting they would excel in political conspiracy if it were an Olympic event.

Phogat, aged 29, was disqualified at the Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight before her women's 50 kg final bout on August 7. She has appealed against this decision, with a verdict expected on Tuesday. The IOA president, P T Usha, stated that managing weight is the athlete's responsibility and condemned attacks on the medical team.
Yadav's Critique of IOA's Stance
In a Hindi post on X, Yadav said, "The statement of the Indian Olympic Association about the great warrior Vinesh Phogat that the responsibility of the weight and body of the player lies only with her coach and support team is reprehensible." He questioned whether the IOA was blaming both the coach and support team, who are also associated with the association.
Yadav further questioned who selected the support team and why a chief medical officer was sent if the responsibility lay solely with the coach and support team. He expressed concern that such statements could demoralise athletes who have worked hard to reach the Olympics, along with their coaches and support teams.
Impact on Athletes' Morale
Yadav emphasised that these remarks were akin to injustice towards Vinesh Phogat. He stated, "People of the country are watching and they understand everything. The country should at least bear the responsibility of the person on whose shoulders the responsibility of the country lies."
He reiterated his point by saying that if there were an Olympics for political conspiracy, today's rulers would win without competing. Yadav tagged Phogat in his post to show solidarity.
P T Usha had clarified that it is unacceptable to blame IOA’s medical team for Phogat's weigh-in issue. She insisted that athletes must manage their weight themselves. This statement came after Phogat faced criticism for her disqualification due to being overweight.
Yadav's comments highlight broader concerns about athlete support and accountability within sports organisations. His remarks also reflect public sentiment regarding how athletes are treated by those in power.
The decision on Phogat’s appeal against her disqualification is eagerly awaited. It will determine whether she can continue her pursuit of Olympic success despite this setback.
The situation underscores ongoing debates about athlete welfare and organisational responsibilities in sports. It also raises questions about how sports bodies handle such incidents and communicate with athletes and their teams.
The outcome of Phogat’s appeal will be crucial not just for her career but also for setting precedents in how similar cases are managed in future. The public and sports community await this decision with keen interest.
This incident has sparked discussions about fairness and support systems for athletes representing their countries at international events. It remains to be seen how these issues will be addressed moving forward.
The controversy surrounding Phogat’s disqualification has brought attention to broader systemic issues within sports administration. It highlights the need for clear guidelines and better communication between athletes, coaches, and sports bodies.
The final decision on Phogat’s appeal will likely influence future policies and practices within sports organisations. It is a critical moment for ensuring fair treatment and adequate support for athletes competing at the highest levels.
