Kalaignar Magalir Urimai: When Will Next Installment of Rs 1000 Be Released?

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced that the installment of the 'Kalaignar Urimai Thogai' scheme will be credited to eligible women beneficiaries soon.

The announcement brings relief to over one crore women heads of households who receive ₹1,000 monthly under the program named after late DMK patriarch M. Karunanidhi.

Vijay added that the administration needs time to restructure the scheme, which his party, TVK, had pledged to enhance to ₹2,500 per month for women below 60 years during the recent assembly election campaign.

However, the promise of a quick rollout has drawn sharp fire from former Chief Minister MK Stalin. Questioning the delay, Stalin said, "Why the hold-up in continuing an existing scheme? What reorganization are you planning? Didn't you pledge in the Legislative Assembly just yesterday that Dravidian model welfare schemes will continue? Announcing ₹2,500 and then dragging your feet on even ₹1,000-is this your idea of change?"

Stalin's attack carries weight, as just before the election, his government had deposited ₹5,000 each into the accounts of 1.31 crore women under the same scheme-including ₹3,000 as advance for February, March, and April, plus a ₹2,000 'summer special' grant.

As political heat rises, all eyes are on whether the new regime can deliver the May installment without further delay-and how soon the promised ₹2,500 will become a reality. For now, lakhs of women across Tamil Nadu wait, watching their bank notifications closely.

How To Register?

Registration for the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai (KMUT) scheme is available online via the official portal or offline at ration shops and e-Sevai centers. Eligibility requires being a woman aged 21+, Tamil Nadu resident, family income under ₹2.5 lakh annually, and no government job/pension/tax payment.

Eligibility Criteria

Permanent Tamil Nadu resident, aged 21+.

Annual family income below ₹2.5 lakh; electricity use under 3,600 units/year; limited land ownership.

Exclusions: Govt employees/pensioners, income taxpayers, owners of four-wheelers, elected reps (beyond panchayat ward members).

Bank passbook (first page).
