Ajit Pawar Raises Concern Over Skewed Sex Ratio Due to Female Infanticide in Maharashtra
In a recent statement that has sparked discussions across Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar highlighted the severe implications of female infanticide on the state's sex ratio. During an event in Pune district, Pawar drew a parallel to Draupadi from the Hindu epic Mahabharat, suggesting that the skewed sex ratios in some districts could lead to complex social scenarios reminiscent of ancient narratives.

Addressing a gathering of medical professionals in Indapur, Pawar voiced concerns raised by gynaecologists regarding undue pressure from the health department to prevent prenatal sex determination. This practice, aimed at curbing the abortion of female foetuses, has placed doctors in a challenging position. Despite acknowledging these grievances, Pawar pointed out the unfortunate reality of illegal activities within medical facilities, including the operation of unauthorized abortion clinics.
The Deputy CM cited specific instances in Beed, where arrests were made in connection with illegal abortion rackets. He emphasized the alarming male-to-female ratios in certain areas, with figures as dire as 850 females to 1,000 males. Pawar stressed the importance of maintaining ethical standards within the medical community while ensuring that government expectations of transparency are met.
In his speech, Pawar also sought to clarify his reference to Draupadi, asserting that his intention was not to offend but to underscore the potential societal challenges posed by gender imbalance. Additionally, he addressed internal political dynamics by commenting on remarks made by Sharad Pawar, his estranged uncle and head of a rival faction within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Ajit Pawar's comments came in the context of familial and political rivalries, particularly highlighting his wife Sunetra's candidacy for the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency against Sharad Pawar's daughter, Supriya Sule. The Deputy CM subtly countered Sharad Pawar's "original-outsider" remark about his wife, advocating for inclusivity and rejecting the notion of outsiders within family and political contexts.
This discourse sheds light on multiple facets of Maharashtra's socio-political landscape, from deep-seated issues like female infanticide and its long-term implications to intra-party dynamics and electoral strategies. As Maharashtra grapples with these challenges, the statements made by Ajit Pawar resonate with broader concerns about gender equity, medical ethics, and political unity.
