Ajit Jogi's Party Seeks Merger with Congress Amid Political Uncertainty in Chhattisgarh
Renu Jogi, the national president of Janata Congress Chhattisgarh J (JCC J) and widow of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, has proposed merging her party with the main opposition Congress in Chhattisgarh. The regional party, established by Ajit Jogi eight years ago, aligns with Congress's ideology. Renu Jogi stated on Thursday that they have approached state Congress president Dipak Baij for this merger.

The request for the merger was formalised in a letter signed by Renu Jogi and her son Amit, who is the state president of JCC J. The letter addressed to Baij highlighted that the only recognised regional party of Chhattisgarh, formed by Ajit Jogi, adheres to Congress's principles. It further mentioned that the party's core committee had unanimously decided to merge with Congress and join its state unit.
JCC J's Political Journey
Ajit Jogi, Chhattisgarh's first Chief Minister, founded the JCC J in June 2016 after leaving Congress. Known as the Jogi Congress, it contested the 2018 assembly elections in alliance with Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). This coalition secured seven seats, with five won by JCC J candidates.
Ajit Jogi was a significant figure in Chhattisgarh politics since its formation in November 2000. A bureaucrat-turned-politician, he passed away in May 2020. Despite a strong performance in 2018 in a state dominated by two major parties, the regional party's influence waned over time.
Recent Electoral Performance
The political landscape shifted for JCC J over five years. In the 2023 assembly elections, they contested independently but failed to win any seats. This decline prompted the decision to seek a merger with Congress to revitalise their political standing.
The letter from Renu and Amit Jogi concluded with a plea for acceptance into the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee. It emphasised their commitment to joining forces with Congress and integrating their leaders and workers into the larger party framework.
The proposed merger reflects an effort to consolidate political strength and align with a party that shares similar values. The outcome of this request could significantly impact Chhattisgarh's political dynamics in future elections.
