Ajay Kumar Bhalla Appointed Governor of Manipur Amid Ongoing Ethnic Clashes and Political Changes

Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the former Union Home Secretary, has been appointed as the governor of Manipur. This region has experienced ongoing ethnic conflicts between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May of last year. Bhalla, who completed a five-year tenure as the longest-serving Union Home Secretary in August, is a retired IAS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

Vishwanath Arlekar has been named the new governor of Kerala. This announcement was part of a series of gubernatorial appointments to five states made by Rashtrapati Bhavan. Meanwhile, Arif Mohammed Khan, previously the governor of Kerala, has been transferred to Bihar. Bihar is gearing up for assembly elections next year.

New Appointments in Mizoram and Odisha

Vijay Kumar Singh, a former army chief and minister in the previous Modi government terms, has been appointed as Mizoram's governor. Singh retired from his position as Army chief in 2012 after a dispute with the government over his age. He joined the BJP before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and won from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Singh successfully retained his Ghaziabad seat in 2019 but did not participate in this year's general elections. His appointment as Mizoram's governor marks another significant step in his political career.

Changes in Odisha's Leadership

The President has accepted Raghubar Das's resignation as Odisha's governor. Hari Babu Kambhampati, who was serving as Mizoram's governor, will now take over as Odisha's governor. These changes were confirmed in a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya had been managing additional responsibilities for Manipur before Bhalla's appointment. The new appointments will become effective once each appointee assumes their respective office roles.
