AIUDF Chief Ajmal to Delve Into Reasons Behind Dhubri Defeat

Following a significant defeat in the Dhubri constituency by over 10 lakh votes, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal addressed the media late Tuesday night, expressing his views on the election results. The three-time Member of Parliament acknowledged the setback but remained optimistic about the party's future prospects in the Assam Assembly elections slated for 2026. Ajmal's loss marked a notable shift in voter sentiment in a region that had previously supported him for three consecutive terms.

Ajmal Explores Dhubri Loss Causes

The AIUDF aimed to conduct an in-depth analysis to understand the factors contributing to their defeat in Dhubri, as well as in Nagaon and Karimganj, where the party also faced losses. Ajmal's defeat came at the hands of Rakibul Hussain, Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Assam and a former minister, who contested from Dhubri for the first time and secured a victory margin of 10,12,476 votes.

Ajmal attributed the electoral outcomes to a nationwide backlash against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government's policies. He cited issues such as potential changes to the Constitution, claims of winning over 400 seats, the controversy surrounding Babri Mosque, and the construction of the Ram temple as key factors that mobilized not only Muslims but also Dalits and other marginalized communities against the BJP.

In other constituencies where AIUDF had fielded candidates, Aminul Islam and Sahabul Islam Choudhury faced defeats in Nagaon and Karimganj respectively. Despite these setbacks, Ajmal remained hopeful about AIUDF's recovery and eventual victory in future elections. He drew parallels with the Congress party's resurgence post-2014 as a source of inspiration for his party's potential comeback.

The AIUDF's strategy moving forward involves addressing its shortcomings and preparing for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections with renewed vigor. Ajmal's confidence in his party's ability to rebound reflects a broader trend of political comebacks observed globally.
