Air India-Vistara Merger: Inaugural Flight from Doha To Mumbai Takes Off
The merger between Air India and Vistara, both entities under the Tata Group umbrella, signifies a monumental shift in the Indian aviation landscape. This integration not only marks the conclusion of Vistara's operations but also heralds the beginning of a unified aviation giant.
The final flight of Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, took off from Doha to Mumbai, signaling the end of its independent operations and the start of a new era under the Air India brand. This move is seen as a significant consolidation in the civil aviation sector in India, with Singapore Airlines retaining a 25.1% stake in the merged entity.

The transition from Vistara to Air India is being handled with meticulous attention to detail to ensure a smooth experience for passengers. The merged entity has introduced a new code, 'AI2XXX', for all former Vistara flights, making it easier for travelers to identify their bookings. This change is part of a broader strategy to integrate the operations, staff, and customer service under the Air India banner seamlessly. According to Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson, teams from both airlines have been collaborating for months to facilitate the transfer of aircraft, crew, and support staff, aiming to make the transition as seamless as possible for their valued customers.
First International and Domestic Flights Post-Merger
In the wake of the merger, the first international flight under the Air India-Vistara banner left Doha for Mumbai, marking a significant milestone as the first international operation by the newly integrated airline. This flight, designated 'AI2286', embarked on its journey at approximately 10.07 pm local time, with a scheduled arrival in Mumbai in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The flight duration was nearly three hours, symbolizing the new beginning for the combined entity. On the domestic front, the merged airline's inaugural flight, AI2984, took off from Mumbai, heading to Delhi, shortly after 1.30 am on Tuesday. This flight was operated using an A320 aircraft, further indicating the smooth continuation of operations post-merger.
Despite the cessation of Vistara's brand, its aircraft, routes, and crew will maintain their operations until at least March, ensuring continuity and minimal disruption for passengers. This strategy is indicative of the careful planning and consideration behind the integration process, aiming to preserve the quality and reliability of service that customers have come to expect from both Air India and Vistara.
The Implications of the Merger
The merger of Air India and Vistara is not just a significant event in the Indian aviation sector; it also represents a strategic consolidation move by the Tata Group. By merging these two airlines, the group aims to create a more robust and competitive entity capable of standing toe-to-toe with global aviation giants. For Singapore Airlines, the decision to merge Vistara with Air India and retain a stake in the joint entity underscores their long-term commitment to the Indian aviation market and their confidence in the merger's success.
This landmark integration of Air India and Vistara marks the end of an era for Vistara, which had been a significant player in Indian aviation since its inception on January 9, 2015, up until its last day of operations on November 11, 2024.
The journey of Vistara, from its launch to its merger with Air India, has been a transformative period for Indian aviation, setting new standards for service and operational excellence. As the combined entity embarks on its new journey, the legacy of Vistara will undoubtedly continue to influence the direction and ethos of the merged airline.
