Air India Flight Status Update: Domestic Network Cut Until Mid-July; Full List of Affected Routes Inside

Air India, jointly operated by the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, is once again under scrutiny as it slashes 5% of its domestic flight operations until mid-July. This decision follows an earlier move to cut 15% of its international widebody schedule after the tragic crash in Ahmedabad on June 12.

While the airline attributed the international cancellations to regulatory checks and the West Asia crisis, the domestic changes come without direct regulatory intervention. This has raised concerns about the ongoing reliability of the Air India flight status, especially for flyers across key metro and Tier-II cities.

Which Domestic Routes Are Affected?

Air India has suspended operations on three routes:

  • Bengaluru-Singapore
  • Pune-Singapore
  • Mumbai-Bagdogra

In addition, 19 domestic routes have seen a drop in frequency, with around 120 weekly flights being removed from the schedule. Data from Cirium shows that the cut affects approximately 12% of Air India's daily domestic operations, previously ranging from 530 to 545 flights a day.

The impacted flights include those operated by the recently merged Vistara fleet (AI 2xxx series) and legacy Air India aircraft, both refurbished and non-refurbished.

Why Is Air India Cancelling Flights?

While no official explanation has been provided for domestic flight reductions, several contributing factors are likely:

  • Fleet Groundings and Maintenance: The airline is undergoing checks and maintenance across its narrowbody Airbus A320 fleet.
  • Operational Pressure Post-Crash: The aftermath of the June 12 crash has caused disruptions in schedules, leading to cascading cancellations.
  • Lower Seasonal Demand: Compared to last June's average of 4.4 lakh daily domestic passengers, current figures show a slight dip.

The Air India flight status tracker has shown multiple delays and cancellations in the past week, hinting at ongoing operational adjustments.

Who Stands to Gain?

IndiGo, India's largest domestic carrier, is expected to benefit the most from the trimmed Air India network. On most of the routes affected, IndiGo already has a strong presence. Akasa Air may also capture additional market share as capacity reduces in July.

However, with the school holidays ending and monsoon travel slowing down, experts suggest the reduced capacity could stabilize fares rather than raise them. There may be no immediate fare hike, but it could prevent further price drops.

Will This Affect Flyers?

Yes. Passengers on affected routes may find fewer flight options and slight adjustments in schedule reliability. The lack of clarity on whether this is a temporary or extended cut creates uncertainty in booking plans.

While Air India has reassured travelers of a return to normalcy, the airline also stated that it would "restore full schedule as soon as practicable," leaving room for further changes.

What's Next for Air India?

This move comes amid Air India's much-publicized five-year transformation plan, Vihaan.AI. The airline claims to be in the "Climb" phase-focused on growth-but repeated flight cancellations suggest there may still be gaps in the basics.

Industry analysts are now questioning whether Air India's route rationalisation is a proactive efficiency measure or a reflection of deeper operational challenges.

Should Passengers Be Worried About Air India Flight Status?

For now, travelers should keep an eye on the Air India flight status through official channels and apps, especially if traveling before mid-July. While the current disruptions are not expected to last long, uncertainty remains-particularly if further aircraft checks or demand drops continue.
