Air India Express Flight Encounters Mid-Air Technical Glitch After Take-Off from Tamil Nadu
An Air India Express flight bound for Sharjah from Tiruchirappalli encountered a technical issue shortly after takeoff on Friday. The aircraft, carrying 141 passengers, took off at 5:30 pm and landed safely at 8:15 pm. A hydraulic system fault related to the landing gear was identified, prompting the plane to circle multiple times to reduce fuel and weight before landing.

According to an Air India Express spokesperson, "we would like to clarify that no emergency was declared by the operating crew." The aircraft circled in a designated area as a precautionary measure to ensure a safe landing. The cause of the technical issue will be investigated thoroughly. Meanwhile, arrangements are being made for an alternative aircraft to continue the passengers' journey.
Response and Safety Measures
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu stated that airport and emergency teams responded swiftly after a full emergency was declared at 6:05 pm. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will conduct a detailed investigation into the hydraulic failure to determine its cause. A senior Boeing pilot explained that narrow-body planes like the Boeing 737 cannot dump fuel and must burn it instead.
The pilot mentioned that overweight landings are possible in emergencies but are only used if critical issues arise, such as a fire. Wide-body planes like the Boeing 777 and 787 have the option to eject fuel. Flight IX 613 was operated with a Boeing 737 aircraft, which must adhere to specific weight regulations for safe landings.
Official Reactions and Acknowledgments
Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi expressed gratitude towards the Captain and co-pilot for their professionalism during the incident. In a post on X, he praised their courage and calmness, stating, "Many thanks to the Captain and the Co-Pilot for the safe landing of flight IX613 from Tiruchirappalli to Sharjah after the landing gear glitch." He also appreciated emergency services for ensuring passenger safety.
Chief Minister M K Stalin held an emergency meeting with officials upon learning about the situation. He instructed them to implement all necessary safety measures, including deploying fire engines, ambulances, and medical assistance. In a post on X, he expressed relief over the safe landing and commended the flight crew for their efforts.
Future Actions and Passenger Safety
The Chief Minister also directed the District Collector to ensure continued passenger safety and provide further assistance as needed. As part of protocol, fire tenders, rescue personnel, and ambulances were dispatched to the airport immediately after the incident was reported. The DGCA closely monitored the situation throughout.
Air India Express has reiterated its commitment to prioritising safety in all operations. They regret any inconvenience caused by this incident and assure passengers that safety remains their top priority. The investigation's findings will help prevent similar occurrences in future flights.
