AIADMK-BJP Alliance: A Political Drama Or Real Break Up?

Chennai: The AIADMK-BJP alliance in Tamil Nadu has been on the rocks in recent days, with both parties making public statements about their differences. But is the alliance truly broken, or is it all just political drama?

Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has said that the post of BJP president is like an onion, with many layers. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami has also said among cadres that the AIADMK has behaved as you thought. Tamil Nadu BJP vice president VP Duraisamy has said that talks are going on to continue the BJP alliance with AIADMK.

AIADMK-BJP alliance: A political drama or real break up?

These statements have left many political observers scratching their heads.

There are a few possible explanations for the current situation. One possibility is that the two parties are simply trying to negotiate a better deal for themselves. The BJP is likely pushing for more seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while the AIADMK is probably trying to limit the BJP's role in the state.

Another possibility is that the AIADMK is trying to distance itself from the BJP because of the BJP's unpopularity in Tamil Nadu. The BJP is seen as a North Indian party that does not understand the unique needs of Tamil Nadu. This unpopularity could hurt the AIADMK's chances in the upcoming elections.

It is also possible that the AIADMK is trying to play a game of brinkmanship with the BJP. The AIADMK may be hoping that the BJP will come back to them with a better offer if they think that the alliance is truly in danger.

Whatever the reason for the current situation, it is clear that the AIADMK-BJP alliance is in a state of flux. It remains to be seen whether the two parties will be able to patch things up or whether the alliance is truly broken. Don't forget that in both parties, one faction needs this alliance alive, and another faction is happy that the alliance has been broken successfully.

Whether the AIADMK-BJP alliance is truly broken or a political drama is the talk of Tamil Nadu tea shops and saloons. The root cause of this doubt is that there is no major reason for the breakup of the alliance. Even after the controversies started by calling AIADMK leaders impotent and the BJP leaders defaming the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Edappadi Palaniswami stood smiling and shook hands with Prime Minister Modi in the front row at the recent National Democratic Alliance meeting in Delhi.

Late C.N. Annadurai himself would stand up and laugh if someone said that the alliance was breaking because they had humiliated him. Edappadi's AIADMK is the party that almost washed its hands of Anna's political policies like state autonomy after joining hands with the BJP.

Even now, AIADMK has not even announced that it has broken the alliance for the BJP's policies and to "save democracy." Even "Anna DMK" cadres are not ready to believe any reason given by the AIADMK leaders. So what could be the reason for this sudden announcement?

Tamil Nadu political observers say that there are two reasons. If the closed-door meeting between Union Minister Amit Shah and Edappadi Palaniswami in Delhi on September 14 was one reason, BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai was another.

During the Amit Shah-Edappadi Palaniswami meeting, there were reports in the media that Edappadi Palaniswami almost "fainted" when Amit Shah asked him to share 20 seats to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While there is one Lok Sabha seat in Puducherry and 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, even BJP party men will tell you that the BJP is not in a position to win a single seat among these if the contest alone.

But media reports said that Amit Shah made this request very strongly to Edappadi Palaniswami. It was said that Edappadi Palaniswami decided to shock the BJP then.

Next is the activities of BJP leader Annamalai. Annamalai had asked the reporters how I would call Edappadi Palaniswami as AIADMK's chief ministerial candidate. Annamalai said that AIADMK should say that Modi is the prime ministerial candidate, but they will not propose Edappadi Palaniswami as the chief ministerial candidate in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

Priyan, a senior journalist and political observer from Tamil Nadu, speaking to "OneIndia", says that "the question of why the alliance broke up will not be answered until the information about what was discussed in the meeting between Amit Shah and Edappadi Palaniswami is revealed." Priyan says that Edappadi Palaniswami's meeting with Amit Shah is the reason for all these things. What is the agenda of the Amit Shah-Edappadi Palaniswami meeting can be understood whether what is happening is drama or a real split between the two parties. He is sure that until then, this game of hide and seek will continue.
