Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2(A) To Be Expanded to Airport: Check Route Map

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, marking a major step forward in strengthening urban transportation infrastructure in Gujarat. The approved extension will cover 6.032 km and include five stations-four elevated and one underground.

The new corridor will feature stations at Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport. Upon completion, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km of operational track.

The total project cost, including Interest During Construction (IDC), has been estimated at ₹2,169.04 crore.

Strengthening Urban Connectivity

Phase 2(A) is designed to significantly enhance public transportation by providing direct metro connectivity to Ahmedabad Airport while linking key residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient transit options. The extension will integrate seamlessly with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro corridor, improving accessibility across the region.

The project is also expected to support future infrastructure development around major sporting events such as the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030, for which nearby sports facilities may be developed.

Boost to Economic Growth and Mobility

The metro extension is expected to stimulate economic activity by improving access to important transport hubs, including the airport, railway stations, and bus terminals. Better connectivity will reduce travel times, enhance productivity, encourage tourism, and create new opportunities for businesses located near metro stations.

Ahmedabad Metro's Growth Journey

The Ahmedabad Metro project was originally sanctioned in November 2014, with construction commencing on March 14, 2015. Commercial operations began in March 2019 with a 6.5 km section connecting Vastral Gam and Apparel Park.

The metro system currently operates through two fully functional phases:

Phase I: 40.03 km with 32 stations across East-West and North-South corridors, including a 6.335 km underground section with four stations.
Phase II: 28.25 km with 22 operational stations connecting Motera, Sector-1, GNLU, GIFT City, and Mahatma Mandir through elevated corridors.

Employment Generation

The Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2(A) project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities. Approximately 2,000 jobs will be created during the peak construction period, while around 500 personnel are expected to be employed for the operation and maintenance of the system after completion.
