The battle lines are drawn for a crucial Rajya Sabha election which would decide whether Ahmed Patel of the Congress would win or not. 45 is the magic number that Patel, a close confidante of Sonia Gandhi needs to return to the Rajya Sabha.

While on one hand Amit Shah would sail through easily and make his debut in Parliament, for Patel, these are tense moments as he tries to keep his flock intact by moving them from resort to resort.

On Tuesday lawmakers in Gujarat would decide whether Patel goes to the Rajya Sabha or not. Sonia Gandhi's political secretary, Patel has done everything under the sun to ensure that the Congress is intact. He is in a battle with Shankersinh Vaghela who has split the Congress.

In the 182 member Gujarat Assembly, the strength of the Congress has gone down to 51 from 57. Vaghela who broke away is alleged to have written this script. The Congress would need the support of 45 MLAs to elect Patel. Both Vaghela and the BJP would hope that one or two either vote against Patel or exercise the NOTA to defeat him.

On the mind of the Congress the Presidential elections too would be weighing in very heavily. 11 from the Congress had cross voted in favour of the NDA's candidate Ramnath Kovind. The Congress would not want a repeat of that.

The Congress has done everything it could to keep its flock together. It carted away its MLAs to a resort in Bengaluru. After staying there for a few days, the MLAs' hospitality in charge was raided by the Income Tax department. The MLAs continued to stay on before reaching Gujarat early this morning. They were once again carted away to a resort in Anand and will stay there before they are taken straight to the Assembly on Tuesday.

The Congress has also resorted to further desperate measures and warned its legislators against cross voting or exercising NOTA. It has said that any move to defy the party will attract heavy penalty including legal action which would mean being barred from contesting elections.
