Ahead of Jharkhand Assembly Elections, Champai Soren and JMM MLAs Eye BJP Switch

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren is expected to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP before the upcoming Assembly elections, according to sources. Currently serving as a minister in Hemant Soren's government, Champai Soren is reportedly in talks with BJP leaders. Speculations are rife that former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Lobin Hembrom might also join the BJP alongside him.

There are rumours that other JMM legislators may leave Hemant Soren's side. Sources indicate these key JMM leaders have already travelled to Delhi to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Although no official statements have been made by either party, this potential meeting has stirred interest in the election-bound state.

Champai Soren's Political Journey

Champai Soren's political career began when he was elected as an Independent MLA from Saraikela in undivided Bihar in 1991. He later joined JMM and won the assembly seat in 1995, defeating BJP's Panchu Tudu. However, he lost the seat to BJP's Anant Ram Tudu in 2000 but regained it in 2005 by a narrow margin of 880 votes.

He continued his winning streak by securing victories in the subsequent elections of 2009, 2014, and 2019. Known as 'Jharkhand's Tiger,' Champai Soren played a significant role in the movement for a separate state, which led to Jharkhand being carved out of Bihar in 2000.

Speculations and Political Moves

The buzz around Champai Soren joining BJP comes amid speculations that several JMM legislators might also switch sides. These developments are particularly noteworthy given the upcoming Assembly elections. The potential shift could significantly impact the political landscape of Jharkhand.

Champai Soren's tenure as Chief Minister was marked by dramatic events. He took office on February 2, replacing Hemant Soren, who had resigned just before being arrested by the ED on money laundering charges. Hemant was released on bail on June 28 and subsequently re-elected as the party's legislature leader.

Who is Champai Soren?

Sixty-seven-year-old tribal leader Champai Soren has been a prominent figure in Jharkhand politics for decades. A matriculate from a government school, he started his political journey from humble beginnings, working alongside his father in their village fields before entering politics.

Soren’s contributions to Jharkhand’s statehood movement earned him widespread recognition and respect. His leadership during crucial periods has solidified his reputation as a steadfast advocate for tribal rights and regional development.

The possibility of Champai Soren joining BJP adds an intriguing twist to Jharkhand’s political scenario ahead of elections. With key players potentially shifting alliances, the state's political dynamics could see significant changes soon.
