Agnipath Scheme, Ankita Bhandari Case May Affect BJP's Future in Garhwal, Uttarakhand
In the picturesque Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the political landscape is undergoing a significant shift as local issues, particularly the Agnipath scheme and the Ankita Bhandari case, emerge as pivotal factors influencing the electoral prospects of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Residents, especially the youth, express deep concerns over these matters, which could sway their voting decisions in the upcoming elections.

Ankit Negi, from Chamoli district, highlights the disillusionment among the youth following the introduction of the Agnipath scheme. Traditionally, joining the Army has been a revered career path for many in this region. However, Negi points out that the scheme has caused widespread agitation among potential recruits. "The youth is deeply agitated," he states, emphasizing that this sentiment is not reflected in the BJP's election manifesto, leading to a lack of support for the party among young voters.
Similarly, Abhinav Patwal from Pauri district recounts the protests and dissatisfaction that have marred the announcement of the Agnipath scheme two years ago. The scheme aims for short-term induction into the armed forces, a move that has not sat well with many aspiring soldiers. "We are clear in our minds that if the scheme is not scrapped, then we will not vote in favour of the BJP," Patwal asserts.
The Agnipath recruitment scheme, rolled out by the government in June 2022, targets youths between 17-and-half years and 21 for a four-year tenure, with an option to retain 25 per cent of them for an additional 15 years. This initiative aims to rejuvenate the armed forces but has met with resistance from those it seeks to attract.
Moreover, the tragic incident involving Ankita Bhandari, a 19-year-old receptionist allegedly killed by her employer and his accomplices in 2022, has raised serious concerns about women's safety in Uttarakhand. Umesh Rana from Srinagar Uttarakhand and Shikha Gusain from Rudraprayag district echo a sentiment of injustice and fear that pervades their community. "Bhandari was our daughter and justice is yet to be delivered," Gusain laments.
Local political leaders acknowledge these issues' significance in shaping voter sentiment. Ishwari Prasad Maikhori, a Congress leader, criticizes the BJP's lack of focus on these local concerns in their election manifesto. In contrast, Harish Sati, a BJP leader, concedes that these issues will impact electoral outcomes but remains hopeful that the party's development work will also be a key consideration for voters.
Naresh Sharma from Pauri reminds us of the crucial role played by the youth in bringing BJP to power in 2014. He warns that both the Agnipath scheme and the Ankita Bhandari case could significantly affect BJP's performance in Uttarakhand in the forthcoming elections scheduled for April 19.
The elections for five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand are poised at a critical juncture where local issues deeply resonate with voters' sentiments. As political parties vie for support, it becomes increasingly clear that addressing these concerns might be pivotal in determining their electoral fortunes.
