After YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, UP Man Arrested For Allegedly Spying On Behalf Of Pakistan's ISI

A man suspected of spying on behalf of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), officials confirmed.

The accused, identified as Shehzad from Rampur district, was apprehended in Moradabad on Saturday, reported India Today.

The arrest forms part of a broader nationwide crackdown on individuals allegedly spying for Pakistani intelligence services, which has already seen several people detained, including social media influencers and YouTubers.

According to a press statement issued by the ATS, Shehzad had been under surveillance after credible intelligence indicated his involvement in smuggling activities along the India-Pakistan border, allegedly under the protection of Pakistan's intelligence apparatus.

Investigations revealed that Shehzad had made multiple trips to Pakistan and was involved in illegal cross-border trade, including cosmetics, garments, spices, and other goods. Authorities believe the smuggling operation was a cover for his espionage efforts.

Shehzad is also accused of cultivating close ties with ISI operatives and passing on sensitive and classified information related to India's national security. Officials stated that he not only provided intelligence but also facilitated ISI activities within India.

Further investigation uncovered that, following ISI directives, Shehzad had transferred funds to Pakistani agents operating in India. He is also accused of assisting individuals from Rampur and other parts of Uttar Pradesh in travelling to Pakistan under the guise of smuggling, with the ultimate aim of recruiting them for ISI-linked operations.

Police claim that the visa and travel arrangements for these individuals were allegedly made with the assistance of ISI agents.

Additionally, Shehzad is said to have acquired and supplied Indian SIM cards to ISI operatives, potentially enabling secure communication for disruptive activities.

A case has been registered against Shehzad under Sections 148 and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the ATS police station in Lucknow. He has been presented before a magistrate, and further legal proceedings are currently underway.
