Advanced Pashmina Certification and Next-Generation DNA Sequencing Facilities Opened at Wildlife Institute of India
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav inaugurated a new Pashmina certification facility and a DNA sequencing centre at the Wildlife Institute of India. Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh attended the event. These facilities build on last year's foundation when the Pashmina Certification Centre was launched, issuing its first unique ID barcode and certificate.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a technology that decodes entire genomes quickly, analysing millions of DNA sequences at once. This method provides insights into genetic diversity, evolutionary links, and population health. In wildlife conservation, NGS helps identify genetic health, understand disease outbreaks, detect illegal wildlife trade, and study climate change effects on biodiversity.
Wildlife Conservation and Genetic Research
The NGS facility enhances the Wildlife Institute of India's role in molecular and genetic research. It supports advanced studies in biodiversity genomics, population genetics, and disease surveillance. An official statement highlighted NGS's importance in identifying genetic barriers, unique adaptations, and species with distinct evolutionary histories.
Yadav emphasised the facility's significance for wildlife research in India. "This facility is a game-changer for wildlife research in India. It empowers scientists with the latest tools to decode the genetic mysteries of our biodiversity and create science-based solutions to protect it," he stated. He stressed India's need for such capabilities to preserve its diverse wildlife.
India's status as a megadiverse nation underscores the necessity of advanced research tools to safeguard its wildlife heritage. The new facilities are expected to contribute significantly to conservation efforts by providing crucial data on genetic diversity and population health. This initiative marks a step forward in understanding and protecting India's rich biodiversity for future generations.
