Activists Demand Jharkhand Government to Fulfil Election Promises

Social rights activists, under the banner of Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch, staged a dharna near Raj Bhavan on Tuesday. They demanded that the Hemant Soren government fulfil its promises.

Jharkhand Govt Pressed on Promises

Key Demands of the Protest

The activists urged the government to cancel the land bank and implement the Panchayats Extension to the Scheduled Areas Act (PESA) in the state. They highlighted that the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance had pledged to address numerous public issues in their 2019 election manifesto.

Birsa Hembrom, an activist, pointed out that around 22 lakh acres of non-cultivated and community land were included in the land bank by the previous BJP government. "The JMM had promised to cancel this land bank but it is still silent on this," he said.

Unfulfilled Promises

Belgian-born economist Jean Dreze noted that the ruling parties had committed to releasing undertrial tribal and Dalit prisoners who have been jailed for long periods on false charges. However, no action has been taken in this regard.

Yogendra Yadav, a social and political activist, also joined the protest and expressed his support for the demands. The activists stressed that while the state government has accomplished many tasks over the past five years, several crucial promises remain unfulfilled.

The protestors emphasised that fulfilling these promises is essential for addressing public issues effectively. They called on the Hemant Soren government to take immediate action on these matters.

The activists' demands reflect broader concerns about land rights and justice for undertrial prisoners in Jharkhand. Their protest aims to hold the government accountable for its commitments made during the 2019 elections.

The demonstration near Raj Bhavan underscores the ongoing struggle for social justice and accountability in Jharkhand. Activists continue to push for meaningful changes that benefit marginalised communities in the state.
