Om Birla Calls for Enhanced Public Participation in Law and Policy Formulation
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted the necessity for greater public involvement in law-making and policy development, especially in today's digital age. He urged citizens to voice their opinions and suggestions when new laws are proposed, as these laws have lasting effects on individuals, states, and the nation. While public participation exists, Birla believes it needs to be significantly increased.

Addressing an audience of academics, policymakers, judges, and students at the KIIT School of Public Policy inauguration, Birla stressed the importance of public policy in shaping India's future. He advocated for policies that are citizen-centric, involve all stakeholders, ensure equal rights, and hold accountability to the people. "The public policies should be formulated in such a way that all sections of the society are equally treated," he said.
India's Democratic Strength
Birla emphasised that India's strength lies in its diversity and democratic values. He noted that those who have tried to undermine democracy have lost public trust. "The people of India have strong faith in democracy," he stated. He also mentioned that democracy is embedded in India's work culture and systems, uniting citizens to face challenges together.
Reflecting on India's response during the Covid-19 pandemic, Birla remarked on the nation's resilience and ability to demonstrate strength to the world. He pointed out that India is now seen globally as a promoter of peace through its policies based on Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning 'the world is one family'.
Public Policy's Role in Nation Building
Birla asserted that a well-crafted public policy is crucial for building a strong nation. As the world's largest democracy, India serves as a model for others due to its inclusive and peace-oriented policies. The Speaker's visit to Odisha included attending a meeting organised by Rama Foundation earlier in the day.
The Speaker's call for enhanced public engagement underscores the need for inclusive governance. By involving citizens more actively in policy-making processes, India can ensure that its diverse population is represented fairly and equitably in its laws and policies.
