Abhishek Manu Singhvi Reacts To Cash Being Found Near His Seat In Rajya Sabha: 'Astonished... Comical'

Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday expressed surprise after Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar revealed that a bundle of currency notes was found on his designated seat during a routine anti-sabotage check. The incident has sparked intense debates in the Upper House.

"I am truly astonished to even hear about it. I arrived at the House yesterday at 12:57 pm, stayed for three minutes until the adjournment at 1 pm, and then spent 30 minutes in the canteen with Ayodhya Prasad before leaving. I have no knowledge of this matter," Singhvi told reporters.

He stressed the importance of a thorough investigation, raising concerns about security. "If people can leave items on any seat, it raises serious questions about safety. Any security lapses must be fully exposed."

"I find it absurd that even in such matters, politics is brought into play. Of course, there must be an inquiry into how people can leave things on anyone's seat. It means each of us should have a seat that can be locked, and the key carried home by the MP. Otherwise, anyone can leave things on the seat and make allegations. If it weren't so serious, it would almost be comical," Singhvi added, speaking to news agency ANI.

Mallikarjun Kharge Criticises Naming of MP

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the Chairman for naming Abhishek Singhvi while the investigation was still ongoing. "When an investigation is underway, no member's name should be mentioned. Such actions are premature and could damage reputations," Kharge said, calling for restraint until the probe is completed.

Chairman Dhankhar Defends His Disclosure

In response to Kharge, Jagdeep Dhankhar defended his actions, stating that he acted responsibly by ensuring an investigation was launched immediately. "I made sure to verify whether the member in question was present in the House. Beyond that, I refrained from making any assumptions," he said, urging decorum in handling the issue.

Government Calls for Scrutiny

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju questioned how such an incident could occur in the highly secure environment of Parliament. "No one brings bundles of cash into the Rajya Sabha. This incident must be thoroughly scrutinised," Rijiju said, stressing the need for transparency.
