Abbas Ansari, Son of Mukhtar Ansari, Gets Relief From Allahabad HC, Assembly Membership Restored

In a dramatic turn of events, former Mau Sadar MLA Abbas Ansari, son of jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, has received a lifeline from the Allahabad High Court.

The court on Tuesday set aside his two-year jail sentence, which had been awarded by the MP/MLA Special Court in Mau earlier this year. With this decision, Abbas Ansari's disqualification as an MLA stands revoked, ensuring there will be no by-election on the Mau Sadar assembly seat.

Background of the Case

On May 31, 2025, the MP/MLA Court in Mau convicted Abbas in a case linked to inflammatory speeches during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He was sentenced to two years in prison and fined Rs 3,000.

Following the conviction, his MLA post was automatically terminated on June 1, 2025, under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act.

When the District Judge of Mau rejected his appeal on July 5, Abbas approached the Allahabad High Court. After detailed hearings, the High Court had reserved its judgment on July 30 before delivering the verdict today.
