AAP's Shelly Oberoi is Delhi's new mayor: 7 things to know

Aam Aadmi Party dislodged the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), breaking the streak of fifteen years.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Shelly Oberoi has won the mayoral election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

She defeated BJP's Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes to become the mayor of Delhi, MCD officials announced on Wednesday. Oberoi polled 150 votes while Gupta received 116 votes out of the total 266 votes polled.

Delhi got the mayor in the fourth attempt since the earlier elections were stalled amid ruckus over voting rights being given to nominated members.

Oberoi said the the AAP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi will carry out inspection of landfill sites in the next three months.

"The 10 guarantees that CM Arvind Kejriwal has given to people, and the dreams that he has foreseen for Delhi, we will work on them," the AAP leader said, when asked what will be her priorities as a mayor. Asked if the election for the six members of the Standing Committee of the MCD will take place today, she said, "yes".

The mayor thanked Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and the people of Delhi. She also thanked Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena. "

My thanks are due also to the Supreme Court, because of whose order the mayor election was held today peacefully," Oberoi said.

"I will give the best in my term, under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal. Work will officially begin in Delhi from tomorrow onwards, and inspection of landfill sites wil be done in the next three months months," she said.

Shelly Oberoi, 39, contested MCD polls for the first time from ward 86- East Patel Nagar.

Oberoi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Delhi, and also a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association.

In the recently concluded MCD polls, she had registered victory from former Delhi BJP Chief Adesh Gupta's home turf.

    Oberoi has pursued her Doctorate in Philosophy from the School of Management Studies (SOMS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and is also the recipient of best paper awards in different national and international conferences, besides winning a Gold medal (Prof Manubhai Shah Award) at ICA Conference. She has also been felicitated with the "Miss Kamla Rani Prize".

    On December 7, the AAP won the MCD polls with 134 seats, ending the 15-year rule of the BJP in the municipal corporation and reducing the Congress to just nine seats in a house of 250.

    This election was very important for AAP, given the recent reunification of MCD. The Union government's decision to reunify three MCDs - North, South, and East into one - had created two centers of power in Delhi.
