AAP Improves Its Tally in Punjab Lok Sabha Elections, Wins Three Seats

The recent Lok Sabha elections in Punjab have concluded with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) securing victories in three constituencies, a result that falls significantly short of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's ambitious goal of winning all 13 parliamentary seats in the state. The Congress emerged as the major victor, claiming seven seats, while the Shiromani Akali Dal and Independents won one and two seats respectively.

AAP Wins Three in Punjab Elections

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, responding to the election outcomes on X, stated, "Accept people's fatwa... Public service and development works will continue." This election was particularly noteworthy as the AAP and its INDIA bloc ally, the Congress, chose to contest separately, a strategy that provided ample ammunition for their opponents to criticize them.

The AAP managed to secure wins in Sangrur, Anandpur Sahib, and Hoshiarpur constituencies. Despite the overall shortfall, this marks an improvement from the 2019 elections where the party won only one seat. The victors from AAP include Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer from Sangrur, Malwinder Singh Kang from Anandpur Sahib, and Raj Kumar Chabbewal from Hoshiarpur.

Throughout the campaign period, Mann's rallying cry was "Punjab banega hero, iss vaar 13-0," highlighting his confidence in a clean sweep victory. The campaign also heavily featured Mann with slogans promoting his leadership for a prosperous Punjab. During this time, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal's incarceration in connection with the Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case saw Mann spearheading support for AAP candidates across Punjab.

The AAP's strategy for these elections included fielding eight sitting Punjab MLAs, five of whom are ministers, alongside three defectors from other parties and a Punjabi actor. Mann's campaign leaned on his government's achievements over the past two years, such as free electricity up to 300 units, over 43,000 government jobs, free medical treatments, tests and medicines at Aam Aadmi Clinics, and the inauguration of Schools of Eminence.

In response to criticism from opposition parties for not fulfilling the promise of providing Rs 1,000 per month to women, Mann announced towards the end of his campaign that his government would instead give Rs 1,100 per month. He urged voters to support AAP candidates across all constituencies to empower him to effectively advocate for Punjab's rights against central authorities.

Mann criticized the central government for withholding Rs 8,000 crore due to Punjab, including Rs 5,500 crore allocated for rural development. He argued that a complete victory in all 13 seats would compel the Centre to release these funds. Reflecting on past performances, it's notable that under Mann's leadership in the 2022 Punjab Assembly polls, AAP achieved a landslide victory by winning 92 out of 117 seats. However, their performance in Lok Sabha elections has seen fluctuations; after winning four seats in 2014 with a vote share of 24.40%, they secured only one seat in 2019 with a vote share dropping to 7.38%.

This election cycle has not only tested the popularity and effectiveness of Bhagwant Mann's governance but also highlighted the dynamic political landscape of Punjab. As AAP navigates its path forward post-elections, its focus remains on public service and development initiatives amidst evolving political alliances and opposition strategies.
