AAP Slams Haryana Govt Over ₹27,915 Crore Power Discom Losses

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Media In-charge Anurag Dhanda on Thursday criticised the BJP-led Haryana government over the financial condition of the state's power distribution companies, alleging mismanagement and mounting losses over the past decade.

Citing official data, Dhanda said Haryana's power discoms are burdened with a cumulative loss of ₹27,915 crore, while total outstanding debt has reached ₹20,311 crore. He argued that despite charging consumers high electricity tariffs and fixed charges, the state has failed to stabilise its power sector financially.

According to Dhanda, the growing losses reflect policy failures and poor financial oversight. He questioned why, even after collecting what he described as expensive electricity bills from residents, the state's power utilities continue to slip deeper into debt. "Who is accountable for the accumulated loss of nearly ₹28,000 crore, and why should future generations bear this burden?" he asked.

Comparison with Punjab

Drawing a comparison with neighbouring Punjab, Dhanda highlighted the performance of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) under the AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He stated that PSPCL reported a profit of ₹2,600 crore in the financial year 2024-25, marking a significant improvement over previous years.

He also noted that PSPCL secured an A+ grade and ranked second nationally in performance assessments, claiming this demonstrates that effective governance and transparency can strengthen the power sector.

Dhanda pointed to Punjab's "Roshan Punjab Mission," under which households receive up to 300 units of free electricity. He said more than 90 percent of domestic consumers in Punjab have received zero electricity bills, yet the state's power corporation remains profitable.

Demand for white paper

The AAP leader demanded that the Haryana government release a white paper detailing the financial position of its power utilities and clarify what corrective measures have been taken over the past ten years. He questioned why losses and liabilities have continued to rise in Haryana when, according to him, Punjab has managed to provide free electricity while maintaining financial stability.

Dhanda said the "Punjab model" shows that with clear policies and honest leadership, it is possible to offer relief to consumers while strengthening public institutions. He added that people in Haryana are now drawing comparisons and seeking answers from the state government.
