Delhi Mayor Election 2023: AAP's Shelly Oberoi is new Delhi mayor

After three unsuccessful attempts, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Dr Shelly Oberoi has been elected as Delhi's new mayor. The voting was held at the Civic Centre.

Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia congratulated Shelly Oberoi for winning the mayoral election, saying the "goons lost, the public won."

"The goons lost, the public won. Many congratulations to all the workers as AAP candidate has become the mayor in Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Once again whole hearted gratitude to the people of Delhi. Many many congratulations to the first Mayor @OberoiShelly of AAP," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

The MCD elections refer to the elections held for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which is the governing body responsible for the administration of the city of Delhi, India. The MCD is divided into three parts - North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation, and East Delhi Municipal Corporation - and each corporation has its own set of elected representatives. The MCD elections are held every five years to elect the members of the municipal corporation. The last MCD elections were held in 2017.

The AAP had emerged as a clear winner in the December 4 polls, bagging 134 wards and ending the BJP's 15-year rule in the civic body. The BJP won 104 wards to finish second, while the Congress won nine seats in the 250-member municipal House. The electoral college for the election of mayor comprises the 250 elected councillors, seven Lok Sabha and three Rajya Sabha MPs from Delhi and 14 MLAs. The Delhi Assembly Speaker has nominated 13 AAP and one BJP member to the House.
