AAP Punjab MLA Gurpreet Gogi Bassi Found Dead With Gunshot Wound Under Mysterious Circumstances
Late on Friday night, Gurpreet Gogi Bassi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Ludhiana West constituency, was tragically brought to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital by his family members, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The 58-year-old politician's demise was confirmed by both the district AAP president, Sharanpal Singh Makkar, and Ludhiana's Commissioner of Police, Kuldeep Singh Chahal. The circumstances surrounding his death involve a gunshot, but it remains unclear whether the incident was accidental or a case of suicide. An autopsy is expected to provide definitive answers.
Gogi's political journey began in earnest in 2022 when he joined the AAP and secured a victory in the assembly elections against Bharat Bhushan Ashu, a two-time MLA, representing the Ludhiana (West) assembly constituency. His commitment to public service was evident from his involvement in local issues, including efforts to clean up the Buddha Nullah. Gogi had even laid the foundation stone for a pipeline project intended to address the pollution in the nullah in 2022 but took drastic action to destroy it two years later due to frustrations over project delays. His actions prompted assurances for swift action from Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.

The news of Bassi's passing drew immediate response from local officials, including Commissioner Chahal who rushed to the hospital upon hearing of the gunshot. His visit underscores the gravity of the situation and the community's respect for the MLA. Chahal later informed a correspondent from Hindustan Times that the autopsy report would be crucial in determining the exact cause of death, shedding light on whether it was a deliberate act by Bassi or an unfortunate accident.
Prior to his untimely death, Bassi was actively engaged in his constituency's welfare. Just that Friday, he had meetings with Punjab's Vidhan Sabha speaker and MP Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal in Ludhiana about a cleanliness drive for the Buddha Nullah, highlighting his dedication to environmental issues. Additionally, during a visit to Prachin Sheetla Mata Mandir, he vowed to take action against a recent burglary, demonstrating his commitment to public safety and community well-being.
Gogi's political career also saw his family take an active role in local governance. His wife, Sukhchain Kaur Gogi, participated in Municipal Corporation elections, though she did not win against Congress candidate Inderjit Singh Indi. This family involvement in politics underlines the Gogi family's commitment to public service and community development, even in the face of electoral setbacks.
Gurpreet Gogi Bassi's sudden death has left a void in the Ludhiana West constituency and the broader political landscape of Punjab. As the community awaits the autopsy results, the focus remains on his contributions and the ongoing investigations into the circumstances of his passing. His dedication to addressing local issues and engaging with constituents will be remembered as a significant part of his legacy.
