AAP Slams Lt Governor for Unlawful Expulsion of Delhi Assembly Fellows: Major Setback or Power Play?
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accuses Lt. Governor V K Saxena of illegally expelling fellows from the Delhi Assembly to hinder works in public interest. The party welcomed a recent decision by the Delhi High Court directing that these professionals' contracts be extended till December 6.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has recently accused Lt Governor V K Saxena of unlawfully dismissing fellows of the Delhi Assembly, alleging that this move was intended to impede work being carried out in the public interest. This comes following a directive from the Delhi High Court on Thursday which stated that professionals serving as fellows with the Delhi Assembly Research Centre must continue their roles until December 6, despite having their contracts terminated by the assembly secretariat.
Judicial Intervention

Justice Subramonium Prasad asked for clarification from both the Delhi legislative assembly secretariat and services, along with finance departments regarding a petition filed by 17 such fellows contesting their contract termination. As yet, there has been no immediate response available from Lt Governor Saxena's office.
AAP’s Stand Against Alleged Misuse of Power
In reaction to these developments, AAP has welcomed the court's decision and claimed that Lt Governor Saxena is abusing his powers arbitrarily. The party issued a statement declaring: "Delhi will not be run by those who coerce and misuse their powers. And the fact that LG had expelled the fellows by going against laws." They further asserted this action was part of an ongoing campaign designed to halt all work being done for Delhites' welfare.
Termination of Contracts
The controversy revolves around contracts of several research fellows working with the Delhi Assembly Research Centre. These were abruptly terminated on July 5th according to instructions given by Lt Governor Saxena allegedly without any reasonable explanation or due process followed.
Implications For Governance
This dispute between AAP and Lt Governor Saxena raises significant questions about governance in India's capital city. It highlights potential power struggles between elected representatives and appointed officials while underscoring concerns about political interference in public service. The court's decision to uphold the contracts of these fellows, at least temporarily, is a testament to the importance of their work and raises questions about the motives behind their termination.
In conclusion, this incident underscores political tensions within Delhi's governance structure. It brings into focus issues related to power dynamics between elected officials and appointed authorities and concerns over possible interference in public interest work. As this case unfolds further, it will be crucial to keep an eye on how these tensions are resolved and what implications they may have for Delhi's future governance.
