Enchanting visuals of captivating 'doomsday' clouds forming in the skies of Haridwar and Roorkee in Uttarakhand during the monsoon season have gone viral on various social media platforms.
A Twitter user, Anindya Singh, shared a video on his handle, which shows the cloud forming a low-lying, horizontal wall that resembles a snow-capped mountain.

This meteorological phenomenon is known as a 'shelf cloud' or sometimes referred to as an 'Arcus cloud'.
According to The Weather Zone, Shelf clouds are characterized by their distinctive wedge-shaped formation. They typically appear on the leading edge of a thunderstorm, when a mass of cold air is forcefully driven by the wind into a warmer air mass. This phenomenon takes place during the downdraft of a thunderstorm, where the cold air rapidly descends and spreads out, creating a powerful gust front.
The shelf cloud that was captured in Haridwar is a rare and beautiful sight.
