90 Lakhs for 'studying' World Cup? Goa MLAs may bear the expenses themselves

Manohar Parrikar
Panaji, June 13: The Goa MLAs have been facing red ever since they have announced that they would go on a study tour to Brazil for the World Cup. As a result, they have said that they will travel at their own expense.

After the BJP government sactioned Rs 90 lakh for the trip, which included the sports minister, Congress cried foul alleging that the chief minister was misusing public funds.

Congress's Rashid Alvi said,"yesterday Narendra Modi spoke in Parliament about sanitation, house, and water for poor people and today his own government in Goa is investing 89 lakhs so that his MLAs can go and watch a football match."

Goa government, on the other hand, justified the tour saying that the state is home to regular sporting events. They further pointed out that no bureaucrats were being taken, only politicians who bring vision.

Ironically, the team does not have any sports personality. Arjuna award winners in Football-Bruno Coutinho and Brahmanand Shankhwalkar, however had requested to be made a part of the team.

Apart from Goa sports minister Ramesh Tawadkar, two other ministers and three MLAs will travel to Brazil to watch matches to be held at the end of this month.
