8th Pay Commission: Expectations Soar For Salary And Pension Hike

Central government employees and pensioners are keenly awaiting the announcement of the 8th Pay Commission, following the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission on January 1, 2016. The 7th Pay Commission, which benefited around 1 crore individuals nationwide, is set to conclude on December 31, 2025.

Anticipation is growing that the Narendra Modi government will introduce the 8th Pay Commission from January 1, 2026. The new commission is expected to bring significant revisions to minimum wages and pensions.

However, there has been no official word on the exact timeline or details for the 8th Pay Commission. This lack of clarity has raised concerns among government employees and pensioners about whether the new commission will be implemented as planned.

Employee unions have urged the central government for updates over the past year. Finance Secretary TV Somanathan, when questioned about the 8th Pay Commission during a recent budget session, assured that there is still sufficient time to address the issue.

Under the 7th Pay Commission, the minimum salary for central government employees increased from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000, and the minimum pension rose from Rs 3,500 to Rs 9,000. The maximum salary was set at Rs 2.50 lakh, and the maximum pension at Rs 1.25 lakh. Although employee unions had requested a fitment factor of 3.68 for salary revisions, the government settled on a factor of 2.57.

As the 7th Pay Commission's term nears its end, employees and pensioners remain hopeful for timely updates and a clear implementation plan for the 8th Pay Commission.
