8th Pay Commission: Central Govt Employees' Basic Pay May Rise Multifold Times
The 8th Pay Commission is set to significantly alter the salaries of central government employees in India. Approved by the Union Cabinet in January, its implementation is anticipated between 2026 and 2027. Although announced, details like the commission's terms of reference and members remain undisclosed. Once operational, 8th Pay Commission promises a salary increase for all central government workers.
8th Pay Commission: Fitment Factor
The fitment factor in 8th Pay Commission plays a crucial role in determining salary hikes under the revised Pay Matrix. In the 7th Pay Commission, this multiplier was set at 2.57, raising basic pay from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000. For the upcoming 8th Pay Commission, an increase to 2.86 is expected. This could elevate a basic pay of Rs 18,000 to approximately Rs 51,480, though deductions may reduce the net hike.

Central government employees can anticipate substantial salary increases across various levels with the proposed fitment factor of 2.86. In 8th Pay Commission, Pay Level 1, for example, basic pay might rise from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480-a boost of Rs 33,480. Similarly, Level 2 employees could see their pay increase from Rs 19,900 to Rs 56,914.
8th Pay Commission: Projected Salary Hikes Across Levels
Level 3 employees are likely to experience a rise from Rs 21,700 to Rs 62,062-an increase exceeding Rs 40,000. The trend continues upward through higher levels. At Level 6, basic pay could jump from Rs 35,400 to Rs 1,01,244; at Level 10, it might soar from Rs 56,100 to Rs 1,60,446-reflecting an over one lakh rupee increase.
The anticipated salary revisions suggest a significant financial uplift for government employees under the new framework. These projections highlight potential enhancements in their financial well-being once the commission's recommendations are implemented.
8th Pay Commission: Diverse Job Roles Covered
The commission will encompass a broad spectrum of job roles within central government employment. At Level 1 are essential support staff like Peons and Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS). Level 2 includes Lower Division Clerks handling clerical tasks. Constables and skilled trades staff fall under Level 3.
Level 4 comprises Stenographers (Grade D) and Junior Clerks managing documentation tasks. Senior Clerks and technical staff at Level 5 provide advanced administrative support. Inspectors and Junior Engineers (JEs) at Level 6 play technical or supervisory roles.
Superintendents and Assistant Engineers (AEs) at Level 7 handle project management tasks while Senior Section Officers or Assistant Audit Officers at Level 8 manage audits or high-level operations. Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) or Accounts Officers at Level 9 oversee operational or financial management.
8th Pay Commission: Impact on Central Government Employees
Group A Officers such as Assistant Commissioners or entry-level IAS officers fall under Level 10. The transformative impact of the commission on salaries is expected to be substantial due to the increased fitment factor. However, these figures are projections; final recommendations may vary.
