7th Pay Commission: Railway Employees Get Salary Boost With 4% DA Hike; Check How Much Increase

7th Pay Commission: In a festive bonanza that will bring cheers for the Central government employees, the Railway Board, the highest administrative authority of the Indian Railways, India's largest employer, has increased the dearness allowance (DA) for Railways employees by 4 percent, raising it from the previous 42 percent to the new rate of 46 percent.

This adjustment in the DA rate is effective from July 1, 2023. In an official circular dated October 23, 2023, the Railway Board announced this decision, with the President's approval. The circular was directed to the general managers and chief administrative officers of All India Railways and Production Units.

7th Pay Commission: Railway Employees Get Salary Boost With 4% DA Hike

The DA increment will be added to the basic pay, as stipulated by the 7th Pay Commission. Employees will witness this increase in their remuneration from the following month, and it will retroactively apply from July 1, 2023. Shiva Gopal Mishra, the General Secretary of the All India Railwaymen's Federation, expressed his appreciation for the decision, highlighting that it was overdue since July and was timely as it was announced prior to Diwali this year.

DA, or dearness allowance, is computed based on the consumer price index (CPI) to counter the effects of inflation on railway personnel's salaries. As stated by M. Raghavaiah, the General Secretary of the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen, the federation is continuing to advocate for the release of the DA that had been frozen during the COVID-19 pandemic period, spanning from January 2020 to June 2021.

Furthermore, the Union Cabinet increased the DA for central government employees by 4 percent to 46 percent, effective from July 1, 2023, last week. This decision is expected to benefit 48.67 lakh employees in the government service and 67.95 lakh pensioners.

In another noteworthy development for railway employees, the Union Cabinet also approved a 78-day bonus for over 11.07 lakh non-gazetted railway employees in group C and D. The bonus will be disbursed to the lowest-grade railway officers based on their minimum pay.
