Protesters Initiate 72-Hour Shutdown Against Katra Ropeway Project Amid Job Concerns

Shopkeepers, along with pony and palanquin owners, initiated a 72-hour protest on Friday. They oppose a proposed ropeway project in Katra, the starting point for pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. Demonstrators voiced their discontent with the Shrine Board, demanding the project's cancellation.

Katra Protests Against Ropeway Project

Concerns Over Economic Impact

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) approved a Rs 250-crore ropeway project. This project will connect Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat along the 12-km path to the shrine. Those opposing it fear losing their livelihoods due to the new construction. Shopkeepers and service providers assist thousands of pilgrims daily.

Prabhat Singh, leader of the shopkeepers' association, expressed strong opposition to the project. "We will not allow the ropeway project to be implemented in Katra. We have been fighting against it for three years. Assurances were given to us in the past, but now they have gone ahead with the project," he stated.

Protesters Demand Project Cancellation

Singh highlighted that many families depend on income from businesses and services catering to pilgrims. He warned that if their demand to halt the project is not met, they will persist with their strike. "We have started our 72-hour-long strike. If they do not concede to our demand of shelving the project, we will continue with the strike," Singh added.

Last week, SMVDSB decided to proceed with this long-anticipated ropeway project. The aim is to offer a safer and quicker journey for pilgrims visiting the shrine. Anshul Garg, CEO of SMVDSB, mentioned that this development would significantly benefit those who struggle with the 13-km steep trek.

The protest underscores concerns about potential job losses among local service providers. As discussions continue, both sides remain firm in their positions regarding the future of this significant infrastructure project.
