72-Hour Katra Blockade: WATCH Video - Local Protests Against Vaishno Devi Ropeway Disrupt Pilgrimage

72-Hour Katra Blockade: A 72-hour blockade in Katra, Jammu, is disrupting daily life and creating tensions as local business owners, including shopkeepers and pony wallahs, protest the Mata Vaishno Devi ropeway project. The protest, organized by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti, began on December 25 and aims to halt all activities in the town during the blockade.

What is the Mata Vaishno Devi Ropeway Project?

72-Hour Katra Blockade

The ₹250-crore Mata Vaishno Devi ropeway project was proposed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board to make it easier for elderly, sick, and children to access the shrine. The ropeway will connect Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, the path leading to the temple, reducing the arduous 13-kilometre trek.

However, the local business community has voiced strong opposition to the project. They argue that it threatens their livelihoods, especially the workers, shopkeepers, and service providers who depend on the traditional pilgrimage route. Fearing job losses, many in the community have organized the blockade, bringing business activities in Katra to a standstill.

Tensions Erupt as Police Intervene

The protest took a tense turn when local police, attempting to disperse demonstrators, resorted to lathi-charging the crowd. Some protesters were taken into custody, further escalating tensions. To maintain order, security forces held a flag march in Katra.

72-Hour Katra Blockade

Despite the police presence, the 72-hour strike continues, with local BJP and Congress leaders offering their support. Authorities initially planned a meeting with the deputy commissioner of Reasi, but this was delayed, prompting the Samiti to continue their strike, believing the delay was a tactic to gain more time.

Pilgrims Express Discontent

The ongoing blockade has caused significant inconvenience for pilgrims. With local businesses, restaurants, and transit services closed, many visitors are struggling to find food and rest areas. One frustrated pilgrim noted, "We are having a lot of problems. Over the course of this three-day bandh, where will pilgrims eat and rest? This protest is causing unnecessary hardship."

Some pilgrims, however, believe the ropeway project will benefit the elderly and the sick, offering more accessible facilities for those who have difficulty making the long trek to the shrine.

Continued Support for the Strike

Despite the disruptions caused by the blockade, the protestors have remained firm in their stance, with support from local political figures. Authorities are hoping to resolve the issue, but the delay in talks has only fueled further determination among those opposing the project.

As the situation continues to develop, both the local business community and the government face increasing pressure to address the concerns of the protestors while ensuring the smooth flow of pilgrimage activities.
