5 militants arrested from Meghalaya

Backed by the Meghalaya police, an Assam Police team arrested five militants. The 5 include a self-styled commander along with a cadre of the outlawed Tiwa Liberation Army (TLA) and three rebels of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA.)

The 5 were arrested from the Salang area of Meghalaya in late on Wednesday night.

Motilal Deora, the self-styled 'Commander' of the TLA, had allegedly issued an extortion note to Paban Manta, Chief Executive Member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council demanding Rs 50 lakh.

"A hunt was launched for the militants based on the FIR lodged by the Chief Executive member" stated Swapnanil Deka, Superintendent of Police, Morigaon, Assam.

Acting on a tip-off, the Assam police team backed by a police team from Meghalaya raided the Salang area of Meghalaya where the militants were camping. It is believed that they were undergoing arms training in the camp.

The five arrested were identified Motilal Deori, TLA cadre Sourav Deka along with Meghalaya based GNLA militants Khasang A Marak, Smart A Marak and Arween A Marak. Arween is believed to be acting as linkman.
