41 Workers Trapped in Collapsed Tunnel in Uttarakhand, Rescue Efforts Underway

Rat-hole mining experts have been called in to help rescue 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand. Vertical drilling from above the tunnel has reached a depth of 36 metres out of the 86 metres needed.

In a bid to rescue 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand, rat-hole mining experts have been called in to assist in the operation. The incident occurred on November 27, leaving the workers buried under the debris. The rescue efforts involve a combination of manual drilling and vertical drilling from above the tunnel.

Horizontal Drilling and Vertical Progress

Twelve rat-hole mining experts will be tasked with manually drilling and excavating horizontally through the final stretch of debris, which is approximately 10-12 meters. This comes after a large auger machine, previously used for drilling, got stuck in the rubble. Simultaneously, vertical drilling from above the tunnel has reached a depth of 36 meters, with the target being 86 meters.

Technical Challenges and Teamwork

The horizontal drilling through the rubble requires a meticulous approach. Individual workers will enter the escape passage equipped with drills and gas cutters to overcome obstacles such as iron girders. By Monday evening, the last bit of the stuck auger was successfully cut out piece by piece, allowing a steel pipe to be inserted further into the partially completed escape passage.

NDMA's Involvement and Communication with Trapped Workers

In Delhi, Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), informed that the vertical drilling, which commenced on Sunday, has reached a depth of 36 meters. Rescuers aim to pull out the workers through this one-meter-wide shaft once it breaks through the top of the tunnel below, estimated to be achieved by Thursday. Another eight-inch wide shaft, drilled from a nearby point, has reached approximately 75 meters down. This probe, acting as a potential supply line for the trapped workers, has indicated favorable geological conditions for the main shaft thus far.

Principal Secretary to Prime Minister P K Mishra, Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, and Uttarakhand Chief Secretary S S Sandhu visited Silkyara on Monday to assess the rescue operation. Mishra communicated with the trapped workers, assuring them of the efforts being made by multiple agencies and urging them to remain patient. Gabbar Singh Negi, on behalf of the workers, conversed with the officials through the communication link. The workers, located in a two-kilometer built-up stretch of the tunnel, are receiving food, medicines, and other essentials through a six-inch pipeline.

Health Status and Medical Preparations

NDMA member Hasnain reported that the trapped workers are in good health. However, considering the passage of time, arrangements for medical facilities have been prioritized to address any potential health issues.

Weather Conditions and Challenges

The meteorological department has issued a yellow alert, indicating light rains in the next 24 to 48 hours. However, Hasnain assured that the rescue work will not be hindered by these weather conditions. Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Mishra has directed officials to ensure all necessary medical facilities for the trapped workers.

The rescue operation at the Silkyara tunnel collapse involves a combination of expertise and technology. Rat-hole mining experts, along with vertical drilling and manual excavation, are working tirelessly to rescue the trapped workers. With the unwavering efforts of multiple agencies and constant monitoring, there is hope for a successful rescue mission.
