40 Tourism Projects Approved to Develop Lesser-Known Destinations Across India
The Indian government has approved 40 projects, valued at over Rs 3,295 crore, to transform lesser-known locations into iconic tourist spots. These projects span 23 states and aim to distribute tourists more evenly across the nation. The Ministry of Tourism, following the Department of Expenditure's guidelines, has issued operational instructions for Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) to develop these sites.

By October 15, 2024, the ministry had received 87 project proposals worth over Rs 8,000 crore. After evaluation, 40 projects were selected based on specific criteria and guidelines. These projects have now been sanctioned by the Department of Expenditure. Some notable destinations include Rang Ghar in Assam, Matsyagandha Lake in Bihar, Town Square in Goa, and Orchha in Madhya Pradesh.
Focus on Sustainable Tourism Projects
The initiative aims to provide long-term interest-free loans for 50 years to states. This financial support is intended for the comprehensive development of iconic tourist centres and their global branding and marketing. By investing in these projects, the scheme seeks to stimulate local economies and create job opportunities through sustainable tourism initiatives.
The Ministry of Tourism circulated SASCI guidelines to state governments, urging them to submit proposals for impactful destinations. The goal is to alleviate pressure on popular tourist sites by promoting lesser-known areas. This approach is expected to enhance the overall tourism experience while ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
Timeline and Funding Details
States have been given a two-year timeline to complete these projects. The funds are scheduled for release before March 2026. This strategic plan aims to boost local economies and ensure a balanced distribution of tourists across India. By focusing on underexplored destinations, the ministry hopes to improve tourism experiences nationwide.
This initiative reflects a strategic approach to selecting new projects that can significantly impact tourism. By developing these iconic sites, the ministry aims to promote a more balanced distribution of tourists across the country while enhancing local economies and creating employment opportunities through sustainable tourism practices.
