4 Labour Codes Approved: Govt Pushes for Better Wages and Employee Welfare

The government has put all four Labour Codes into effect, bringing a major shift to India's labour framework by merging 29 central laws into a unified system. Officials said the step is intended to update outdated regulations and build a more supportive environment for both workers and industries.

Major Codes Now Active

The newly implemented framework includes the Code on Wages 2019, the Industrial Relations Code 2020, the Code on Social Security 2020 and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code 2020.

"The four labour codes have been notified and now they are the law of the land," labour minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced during a press conference.

Goal of Modernising Labour Rules

According to the labour ministry, this reform is designed to simplify compliance, raise worker protections and prepare India's workforce for the needs of a rapidly changing economy.

By modernising labour regulations, enhancing workers' welfare and aligning the labour ecosystem with the evolving world of work, the ministry said this initiative marks a strong push toward a more resilient and self-reliant industrial sector that supports the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Why the Overhaul Was Needed

The ministry noted that several of India's labour laws date back to the period between the 1930s and the 1950s, an era with a very different economic landscape. While many global economies have streamlined their labour rules in recent decades, India continued to rely on numerous fragmented laws that often overlapped.

The comprehensive restructuring of these rules, officials added, is meant to remove complexity and help employers and workers operate under a clearer and more efficient system.
