38 attacks on Indian Army: Is India doing enough to stop Pak offensive?

Data also reveals that there were 38 attacks on the Army in the past three years.

The fidayeen attack at an army camp in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir raises the question if enough is being done to counter the menace from Pakistan. An initial assessment of the attack suggests that the terrorists of the Jaish-e-Mohammad had managed to infiltrate into Kupwara late Wednesday night. They carried out the attack on Thursday in which three soldiers were martyred. Two terrorists were killed in the incident.

This has once again brought the focus on the increasing number of infiltrations in Jammu and Kashmir. The data available with the ministry of Defence states that 127 infiltration attempts till February 2017. 88 of them were reported in 2016. The data is for the past 15 months.

Data also reveals that there were 38 attacks on the army in the past three years. In these attacks, 156 soldiers were martyred. Most of these incidents have taken place in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2016, nine soldiers died while fighting infiltrators. Forty had died in counter-insurgency operations

The Home ministry had said in the Rajya Sabha in November 2016 that there were 200 terrorists active in the Valley. These were the statistics given out following the Uri attack in which four terrorists killed over 16 personnel of the army.

With the summer setting in, the army is bracing for more attacks. There is usually a lull in infiltrations during the winter. However, during summer, Pakistan tends to step up the infiltrations. Moreover, there is enough intelligence to suggest that Pakistan is planning a major unrest in Kashmir under the banner called, "united jihad." This operation would see the deadliest terror groups, Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad coming together. Attack only the army while in Kashmir is the instruction handed out to these groups.
