Police Detain 29 Individuals at Durga Puja for Distributing Leaflets Supporting Junior Doctors' Protests

On Wednesday evening, police detained approximately 29 individuals from a well-known Durga Puja venue in south Kolkata. They were distributing pamphlets about the junior doctors' protests seeking justice for the RG Kar hospital victim, according to an officer. These individuals were taken to the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar from the Tridhara Sammilani Puja at Deshapriya Park.

29 Detained at Durga Puja for Leaflet Distribution

The police described those detained as ordinary citizens supporting the medics. However, junior doctors claimed that their colleagues were among those "picked up." This incident led to further protests by medics near Dharmatala, where seven doctors are on a hunger strike. The protesting doctors began a march towards Lalbazar but were halted by police on Bentinck Street.

Protests and Demands for Release

The demonstrators sat on the road, demanding the immediate release of their colleagues without conditions. "We were not told by the police why they had brought our colleagues to Lalbazar. This is nothing but atrocity. We will not leave unless our friends are released," stated one of the junior doctors. The protestors expressed their determination to continue until their demands were met.

Before arriving at Deshapriya Park, the protesting medics had distributed leaflets and held a symbolic protest at another popular Durga Puja location in south Kolkata's Maddox Square. "We had planned to distribute such leaflets at several crowd-puller marquees in the city... There was no problem in Maddox Square. We see no reason to harass our colleagues," remarked another young doctor.

Security Measures and Public Reaction

In response to these events, security around the Lalbazar area was heightened to prevent any potential disturbances. The situation remains tense as both sides stand firm in their positions. The junior doctors continue to demand justice and support for their cause, while authorities maintain order and ensure public safety.

The unfolding situation highlights ongoing tensions between medical professionals and authorities over recent incidents. As events develop, both parties seek resolution while ensuring that public safety and order are maintained throughout the city.
